Museo Civico di San Gimignano
The Palazzo Comunale has stood on Piazza del Duomo since 1288, and the room on the first floor where Dante Alighieri made his case for Florentine alliance in 1299 still carries his name. That Council Room — the Sala di Dante — holds a Maestà by Lippo Memmi painted in 1317, and frescoes from around 1290 showing hunting scenes and a tournament dedicated to Charles of Anjou.
The museum spreads across two floors of the palace, taking in the Camera del Podestà with its unusually candid frescoes of earthly love by Memmo di Filippuccio, a pinacoteca with work by Benozzo Gozzoli, Filippino Lippi and Pinturicchio, and — at the top of 218 stone steps — the Torre Grossa, the tallest tower left standing in the city.

The story behind Museo Civico di San Gimignano
The palace was built in 1288 as the seat of civic power, then enlarged in 1323 when the internal courtyard — now decorated with coats of arms and a cistern dated 1361 — was added. From 1337 it served as the principal seat of the town's government. The crenellated crown you see today is largely the work of architect Giuseppe Partini, who restored the building between 1878 and 1881.
The museum itself opened here in 1852, giving a permanent home to centuries of civic and religious commissions. The Torre Grossa, erected between 1300 and 1311, was built as the tallest tower in San Gimignano — a status it still holds — and is the only one in the city open to the public.

The Pass covers all Civic Museums plus the Duomo over two consecutive days — buy it here or at any participating site. Last admission is thirty minutes before closing. The tower climb is 218 steps on a narrow staircase; allow extra time in high season when queues form at the top.

San Gimignano is not just a postcard village, it is a reminder of ambition, resilience, and the enduring silhouette of history against an open sky.
Great place to visit when in San Gimignano. We went in when it opened at 10am so it wasn’t busy. They have redone the stairs so it’s quite an easy walk up - if you are tall you will need to duck your head at the end. The views are breathtaking! You then get to descend and walk into a great little museum. Would greatly recommend when visiting San Gimignano.
We didn’t get inside, but even the courtyard and the view were pretty good!

Lovely place. A must see when in San Gimignano! I suggest you get the San Gimignano pass, since it does save you money if you visit more than two attractions
