Museo Civico di Amalfi
On the first floor of Amalfi's municipal palace, in a council chamber named after the Neapolitan painter Domenico Morelli, sits a small collection that quietly accounts for why this town once mattered to the entire Mediterranean world. The centrepiece is the Tabula Amalphitana — an 11th-century maritime legal code of 66 articles that governed trade and conduct at sea across the medieval Med.
Alongside it: a compass salvaged from the cruiser Amalfi, sunk during the First World War; Scielzo's hand-stitched regatta costumes from the 1950s depicting Amalfi's medieval nobility; and Morelli's original sketches for the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea's facade mosaics. It takes twenty minutes to walk through, longer if you read.

People who linger tend to spend most of their time with the Tabula Amalphitana — the placard is spare, so bring some background reading or look it up before you go. The Morelli sketches, rougher and more alive than the finished mosaics a few streets away, are easy to overlook on the far wall.
The story behind Museo Civico di Amalfi
The Museo Civico grew from Amalfi's long effort to preserve the artefacts of its maritime republic, once one of the four great Italian sea-powers. The collection was originally housed in the Sala Morelli of the Palazzo Municipale on Piazza Municipio — a room that doubled as a council chamber, which gives the space an odd, useful tension between civic administration and civic memory.
In 2010 the collection was reconstituted as the Museo della Bussola e del Ducato Marinaro and subsequently relocated to the ancient Arsenale, the medieval shipyard down near the harbour. What remains in the Sala Morelli still includes works by Morelli himself, portraits of the historian Matteo Camera and the legendary compass figure Flavio Gioia, and canvases by Pietro Scoppetta, born in Amalfi in 1863.

Entry is free. Opening hours roughly follow municipal office times — reportedly 10–14 and 16–19 daily, but these shift, so call ahead (+39 089 8736211) or check on arrival. The museum is compact; pair it with the nearby Cloister of Paradise rather than treating it as a standalone trip.

A fantastic gem in Amalfi! We were greeted by Ventura, whose high energy and super friendly attitude made our visit immediately memorable. Excellent museum to visit. The space itself is impressive just seeing the precise construction of the walls and how solid it feels. Loved the compass history . Shout out to Bonaventura! His enthusiasm and depth of knowledge is unmatched.
A hidden gem!! Found within the City of Amalfi’s ancient armory and museum, a free musical - with English sub titles. The musical was beautifully done!! The cast will endear themselves to you!!! You will love the leading men and women and you will hate the villain - the villain plays such a great role as the villain - that you like disliking him!!! The music and lines are easy to follow as there are monitors set up with English translations. The story follows how Amalfi came to be and the struggles the people had to overcome. The voices of the actors are really great!! The sound resonates throughout the hall of this ancient armory!!! Filled with mysterious smoke and giving you the feeling of actually watching from afar!!! Theater in the round .... where every seat has 100% visibility of the action. It’s free!!! At the end you can easily contribute a donation, buy a CD and get a picture with the cast. Love them!!
