Museo Archeologico di San Gimignano
The first things you notice on the first floor of the old Santa Chiara Conservatory are the Etruscan funerary urns — Volterran in style, each with a reclining figure holding a coin for the ferryman. They are small, matter-of-fact objects, and they have been waiting here a very long time.
The museum gathers Etruscan and Roman finds from the territory around San Gimignano — fibulae, necklaces, plates, vases — alongside a bronze votive figure called Hinthial and fragments from the late-Roman Villa of Aiano. A second section turns to medieval glassmaking and ceramics. It is a quiet, unhurried place, one floor above the street.

The story behind Museo Archeologico di San Gimignano
The building began its life as the Santa Chiara Conservatory, a religious complex that was repurposed over the centuries before the town undertook a substantial recovery of the site between the 1980s and 1990s. The broader San Gimignano civic museum system dates to 1853, though the archaeological collection as it stands today is a product of that later restoration work.
The complex now holds three distinct collections under one roof: the archaeological museum, the Spezieria di Santa Fina — a pharmacy annexed in 1253 to the hospital of the same name — and the Raffaele De Grada Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, named for the Milanese painter (1885–1957) who made San Gimignano his adopted home.

The San Gimignano Pass covers this museum plus Torre Grossa, the Collegiata, Museo Civico and several others over two consecutive days — good value if you plan to move through the town's collections. The museum is a short walk from Piazza Duomo toward Porta San Matteo. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing.

As part of the network of hospitals that supported pilgrims along the Via Francigena, the site offers interesting features related to its assistance, treatment, and pharmaceutical production. For example, ancient herbalist manuscripts and numerous containers for extracting active plant ingredients are on display. Keep in mind that the hospital houses a larger complex belonging to the Civic Museums, including the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art, both highly recommended.
Set back from the traditional itinerary of the historic center, it offers a stop to appreciate archaeological collections, the interesting apothecary, and a collection of modern and contemporary art featuring highly influential names of twentieth-century Italy.
