Marina Piccola di Sorrento
The lift down from Villa Comunale costs €1.10 and drops you at the working edge of Sorrento — a compact harbour where car ferries idle beside hydrofoils and the volcanic-sand strip is narrow enough that the lido platforms have been built out over the water on stilts. This is where the town meets the sea in a practical sense: ferries to Capri leave roughly every hour and take about twenty minutes, and the wharf handles traffic to Naples, Ischia, Procida and the Amalfi Coast.
Old documents name this place *portus capi cerbuli*, and it was for centuries the only sea-level entrance to the city. That ancient gate still marks Sorrento's eastern boundary, and the mouth of the Valley of the Mills opens just behind the waterfront.

People who pass through regularly tend to arrive just before the Capri ferries thin out — mid-morning, when the light is already sharp off the water — and take a table at one of the beach-club restaurants rather than rushing back up. On the first Sunday of August, the Festa della Madonna del Soccorso puts a statue of the Virgin onto a boat; watching the procession from the pier is worth timing a visit around.
The story behind Marina Piccola di Sorrento
Before the Romans, this harbour was already in use — its old Latin name, *portus capi cerbuli*, appears in documents that predate the town's medieval walls. For centuries the ancient gate here was the sole sea-level access to Sorrento, making the small port strategically significant well beyond its size.
The pink and grey Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso is thought to have been built in the sixteenth century; its bell tower was added in 1715. Above the harbour on Punta San Vincenzo, Villa Tritone occupies land that passed through Roman, monastic and eventually private hands — William Waldorf Astor later transformed the grounds into a garden planted with rare and exotic species.

Bus lines B and C connect the marina to Piazza Tasso and the railway station; the lift (€1.10, opens 7:30 am) is the most direct option on foot. Ferry tickets to Capri run €20–€30 return. If you want a beach day rather than a departure point, Marina Grande has a stronger atmosphere.
Summer (June–August) brings long sunny days and sea temperatures warm enough for the lido platforms to be worth the rental fee; August peaks around 28°C and rainfall is minimal, though the marina's north exposure takes some edge off the heat. Spring and early autumn are quieter and cooler — mid-September still reaches nearly 25°C — while winter is mild but wetter, with some ferry services running reduced schedules.
