Lavatoio Medievale (Medieval Wash House)
You descend a wide staircase of lava and lumachella stone — the steps worn smooth, the pattern faintly spiralling underfoot — and the street noise above you drops away. Down here, beneath the level of Via Vittorio Emanuele, twenty-two cast-iron mouths line the walls: fifteen shaped like lion heads, the rest plain, all feeding cold spring water into rectangular stone tanks. A pointed arch overhead carries traces of Arab influence, and a stone plaque dated 1655 announces, in Latin, that the river Cefalino runs 'purer than silver, colder than snow.'
Locals call this place 'U Ciumi' — the river. Women washed clothes here well into the twentieth century, their work accompanied by Sicilian songs and the sound of running water. The river itself begins in the Madonie mountains, near Gratteri, and exits the wash house through covered tunnels that carry it to the sea.

People who linger tend to sit on the lumachella steps in the shadow of the vault on a hot afternoon — the stone stays genuinely cool. The spot is free, takes ten minutes at most, and sits roughly a hundred metres from the beach: easy to fold into a walk toward the cathedral end of the old town.
The story behind Lavatoio Medievale (Medieval Wash House)
The wash house that stands today is not the original. An earlier structure was demolished in 1514, and a replacement was built over the River Cefalino shortly after. In the seventeenth century, the river running beneath the town was covered over, leaving the wash house as a discrete chamber rather than an open riverside scene. The stone plaque on the wall dates from 1655. The whole site was restored in the summer of 1991.
No architect or patron is recorded by name. What is known is the continuity of use: for centuries, this was where the women of Cefalù brought their laundry, working in a space shaped as much by Arab building tradition as by Norman-era Sicily.
Good to know
Entrance is free. The wash house sits below street level on Via Vittorio Emanuele, about a hundred metres from the seafront on the left. Opening hours are posted on-site and can be restricted, so check before making a special trip. City buses stop at the Colombo stop on the lungomare.
The wash house is underground and naturally cool, which makes it a genuine relief in July and August when street temperatures reach 28°C. In winter the town is quieter and wetter, but the site itself is sheltered — the season matters less here than almost anywhere else in Cefalù.

A hidden gem in the heart of Cefalù! This medieval laundry is fascinating and beautifully preserved. Descending the lava steps feels like a journey back in time. The interior is naturally cool, and fresh river water still flows into the sea. A short, free, and very atmospheric stop on your tour of the old town, it's worth a visit if you're in Cefalù.
Very interesting medieval system that still works today. They managed to make a perfect system for the water to flow around and fill the different “boxes” while having new water each second, spectacular! There is no entrance fee, the place is open to the public.
Magnificent old town on the coastline. Duomo (check opening times) with narrow alleyway streets, great restaurants and shops and wonderful sandy beaches with safe swimming. In New town cars from outside may drive. Old Town only pedestrian traffic for non locals- ZTL area. A must visit
I knew this existed and forgot about it then stumbled upon it and remembered it. Fascinating to see worth a visit.
It was almost 95 degrees. We entered down into this ancient wash house and the temperature dropped 10 degrees. It’s incredible how these ancient wash basins were carved out of solid stone. A constant stream of cold water runs through and it’s so unexpected in a busy little town. No charge for this. Go and you will be pleasantly surprised!
