Fontana del Belvedere
Two boat-shaped stone fountains flank the oval ramp at the foot of Villa Aldobrandini, their basins still carrying the six-pointed stars of the Aldobrandini family in low relief. Ippolito Buti carved the original in 1607, with tritons rising from shells and a later addition of putti and dolphin channelling water through the composition. The water no longer flows — damage from wartime bombing and decades of makeshift cement repairs have left the fountains quiet — but the stonework still reads clearly against the retaining wall, and the scale of what was once here is not hard to imagine.
The fountains sit within the grounds of Villa Aldobrandini, a privately held estate that does open its gardens to visitors. Finding the entrance takes a little persistence — the tourist office on Piazza Marconi is your best first stop.

People who've made the trip more than once tend to arrive early, before the gardens fill with tour groups moving up from Rome. The walk from Frascati station takes about five minutes, and the slight uphill approach gives you a first look at the retaining wall before you've even found the gate.
The story behind Fontana del Belvedere
Villa Aldobrandini was begun in 1598 for Ippolito Aldobrandini — Pope Clement VIII — and extended by Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini, with Giacomo della Porta, Carlo Maderno and Domenico Fontana all contributing to its design. The Fontana del Belvedere was carved by sculptor Ippolito Buti in 1607: a barchetta, or boat-shaped basin, decorated with the family's heraldic stars and animated by two tritons in shells. In 1609 Buti added putti and a dolphin from which water flowed. The fountain was later remade, and the version standing today dates from the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century.
The upper garden was badly damaged by bombing in the Second World War, and the fountains absorbed their share of harm. Restoration work began in 2011, but cement repairs have left marks, and the water supply — once fed by an eight-kilometre aqueduct — remains cut off.
Good to know
Take the FL4 train from Roma Termini — around 41 minutes, €2.10 — and walk five minutes uphill to the villa. Confirm garden access at the Frascati tourist office before heading up; opening arrangements can shift. The fountains themselves are currently dry, so visit for the architecture rather than the waterworks.
June through August is the most comfortable window: warm and dry, with July averaging only 28 mm of rainfall. August temperatures peak around 31°C, so mornings are easier than afternoons. November is the wettest month by a significant margin, and January days rarely climb above 12°C.
