The story behind Enoteca Fortezza di Montalcino
The fortress itself was commissioned in 1361 and completed in 1368, designed by Sienese architects Mino Foresi and Domenico di Feo. Its pentagonal plan — with a tower at each angle — was unusual for the period, most fortifications of the era still following a square layout. Francesco Sozzini was installed as its first castellan upon completion. By 1600 it had lost its military function, and a Benedictine community occupied it for a time.
The fortress carries a specific political weight: after Siena fell to Florence in 1555, Sienese refugees held out here, declaring a Republic of Siena in Montalcino that lasted until their own surrender on 31 July 1559. The enoteca was founded within these walls in 1980, and has been managed by Fabio Tassi since 2002.

Access to the courtyard is free; the wall and tower walk costs around €4, paid at the enoteca counter. A mid-level tasting of three Brunellos runs €40, a lighter flight €25. Arrive early — tour groups fill the courtyard by mid-morning. Reach the fortress on foot from Piazza del Popolo in about ten minutes uphill.

Awful wine tasting experience. After having 3 wine tastings in Tuscany, which truly exceeded our expectations, this one was not even average. The 5 wines they provide you with, are super low quality (we did research afterwards), the explanations they gave us was super flat, and the food pairing was ridiculous (dry and hard bread). We wish we’d have known this before so we wouldn’t have wasted our money here.
We had one of the most memorable experiences of our entire trip at this enoteca in Montalcino—truly the best wine tasting we had in all of Italy. We initially booked a Brunello tasting to celebrate my friend Mary’s birthday, and from the start, everything was exceptional. We were seated at a long, beautiful table overlooking the courtyard of the fortress, which created such a stunning and relaxed atmosphere. The tasting began with three outstanding Brunellos, perfectly accompanied by an abundant and thoughtfully curated charcuterie board—beautiful cheeses, meats, and breads that paired seamlessly with the wines. Every detail felt intentional and elevated. What truly made the experience unforgettable, however, was the sommelier. He was incredibly engaging, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic. You could feel how much he loved what he was sharing with us, and that energy made the tasting even more special. As he saw how much we were enjoying everything—and in celebration of Mary’s birthday—he generously brought out several additional wines from their higher-end and reserve selections. Tasting those extra wines, including an exceptional Brunello that has received international acclaim, was such an unexpected and unforgettable highlight. We have done many wine tastings, both in Italy and beyond, and this one stands far above the rest. It was not just a tasting—it was an experience filled with warmth, generosity, and true passion.
Incredible wine tasting experience with Sergio. He is super knowledgeable about wines and gave listened to what we liked and didn’t like in detail, and introduced us to some new ones that we thoroughly enjoyed. This spot also has some incredible food to enjoy while wine tasting, they know how to do it right!
Excelent wines and experience! The Somelier (forgot to ask her name, but she used to be a teacher) was very knowledgeable, entertaining, and lovable! We learned a lot from her! Banfi was my favorite. You can have the tasting either in or outside, so choose depending on the weather. Totally recommend it!
