Down a flight of stairs beneath 17th-century Palazzo Belgiojoso, Lecco's archaeological museum spreads across eight basement rooms — and the descent itself is part of the experience. Before you even reach the first display case, the entrance portico holds stone fragments from the old Fort of Fuentes and late-medieval building remnants, arranged as a lapidary that sets the tone quietly.
The collection moves from a Neanderthal settlement at Rovagnate through Copper Age menhirs, Golasecca iron-age pieces, and a metallurgy room with scale models of a medieval mine and forge. The province's long relationship with iron — extraction, smelting, working — gets its own dedicated space.

People who come back tend to linger in the metallurgy room, where the scale models make the medieval forge feel less abstract than any wall panel could. The staircase ceiling, with its four medallions of Manzoni characters, also catches returning visitors off guard — easy to miss on the way down, harder to forget on the way out.
The story behind Civico Museo Archeologico di Lecco
Lecco's civic museums were founded in 1900, driven by three figures with complementary obsessions: geologist Mario Cermenati, naturalist Carlo Vercelloni, and archaeologist Antonio Magni. The collection moved to Palazzo Belgiojoso in 1927, but the archaeological section closed in 1940 — officially for lack of interest — and didn't reopen until 1963, and then only as a single room with part of the collection.
Serious cataloguing and restoration began in 1980, and the museum as it now exists was inaugurated in 2001, with museological design by Gian Luigi Daccò. The current layout — eight rooms, Middle Paleolithic to Early Middle Ages — is the result of that patient, decades-long effort.
Good to know
Free entry, Tuesday through Sunday, 9:30 to 14:00. Your ticket also covers the Natural History and Historical Museums in the same palazzo. A single ticket, three collections — plan at least a half-day if you intend to do all three. The piazza outside has cafés if you need a break between rooms.

This museum is located inside Palazzo Belgiojoso in Lecco. It was inaugurated in 2001 and conceived as a local museum. All the artifacts found in the area are displayed in chronological order from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages. It's very well explained and rich in content. Admission is free, along with two other museums in the building.
Very interesting. I came here looking for a Celtic iron helmet, which, of course, I found. But I also visited a rich and interesting museum.
