Castle of Rapallo
The castle sits at the eastern end of the Vittorio Veneto promenade on a small rocky islet, connected to the shore by a short stone bridge. It is compact and purposeful — a square tower rising from a rectangular body with rounded corners, the whole thing looking out to sea as it was always meant to do.
What you're looking at was built in a single year, 1550–1551, in direct response to a corsair raid. That urgency is still readable in the architecture: no ornament, no ambiguity about what the structure is for.

People who come back tend to time their visit for early evening, when the light on the Gulf of Tigullio turns the water a flat, pale gold. The panoramic terrace is the reason. On July 3rd, the castle becomes the backdrop for 'la sparata dei ragazzi' — a fireworks display that re-enacts, loosely, its own founding trauma.
The story behind Castle of Rapallo
On July 4, 1549, the Turkish corsair Dragut landed men at three points along Rapallo's shore — Porta Saline, Marina delle Barche, and the Stella district — at first light. The raid was enough. Within a year, construction of a defensive castle had begun under architect Antonio de Càrabo, and on May 10, 1551, Mayor Benedetto Fieschi Raggio inaugurated it.
Over the following centuries the building changed hands and purpose many times: Captain's residence in 1608, prison with a chapel for inmates, then headquarters of the Guardia di Finanza. The municipality bought it in 1958 for 6,700,000 lire, restored it through the 1960s, and again between 1997 and 1999 with support from the Fondazione della Cassa di Risparmio di Genova e Imperia. It is now a declared national monument and functions, when open, as an exhibition space.

Ten minutes on foot from Rapallo's train station, which is 40 minutes by regional Trenitalia service from Genoa. Interior access has been suspended pending safety restoration, so check with the municipal tourist office before visiting — openings for exhibitions happen periodically. Admission is typically free or under €5.
Summer visits — June through September — are warm and mostly dry, with July averaging around 29°C and nearly 300 hours of sunshine. Winter is mild by northern European standards but the promenade can be exposed; February nights drop to around 4°C, and October and November bring the heaviest rain.

Very nice view
The old castle of Rapallo was built around 1200 to protect the town from the pirates. Today is well preserved and sometimes host some art expositions or other events.
Much nicer place to sit for a drink. Snack and enjoy the view. Worth the entry.
