Calata Marconi Waterfront
The pastel facades along Calata Marconi — ochre, terracotta, the particular faded green of old shutters — are the image most people carry away from Portofino, though they rarely know the street's name. This is the curved promenade that wraps the inner harbour, where the buildings press close to the water and the gap between a fishing village and a luxury resort feels narrowest.
Yachts tie up a few metres from café tables. Gelato from Calata 32 is standard equipment for an afternoon stroll. The whole arc of it takes perhaps ten minutes to walk end to end — less if you're not stopping, more if you are.

People who return tend to arrive early, before the day-trippers come in on the boats. The tables outside Da I Gemelli fill fast by noon. Canale bakery, open since 1911, has focaccia out of the oven in the morning — worth timing your walk accordingly. The light on the harbour facade is best in the hour after sunrise.
The story behind Calata Marconi Waterfront
Portofino's harbour has been in use since antiquity — Pliny the Elder wrote of Portus Delphini, the Port of the Dolphin, on this stretch of the Ligurian coast. A diploma from 986 placed the settlement under the Abbey of San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte; by 1229 it had passed to the Republic of Genoa, and after 1815 to the Kingdom of Sardinia.
For most of its history the waterfront was a working shore. By 1950, tourism had displaced fishing as the town's primary economy, and the promenade gradually became what it is now: restaurants and cafés in a continuous ring around the basin. The name Calata Marconi — calata meaning a harbour landing or descent to the water — reflects the functional origins of a street that has since traded nets for menus.

Santa Margherita Ligure is the nearest train station, about 3 miles away with a 15-minute bus connection. Boats run March through October via Golfo Paradiso; ferry services thin out considerably between November and March. The village is pedestrianized — no driving in. September offers warm weather just outside peak-season crowds.

Spring can bring rain; from May onward the weather settles into the warm, clear pattern that holds through October, with September often the most comfortable month of the season.

The prices were outrageous even by Portofino standards: €17 for a Coke Zero and €12 for a bottle of water. The portions were very small, especially considering the prices charged. The spaghetti was bland and lacked flavor, making it difficult to justify the €32 price tag. On top of that, there was a €14 cover charge for two people. We expected quality and value to match the premium prices, but unfortunately neither the food nor the overall experience lived up to expectations. I would not return and cannot recommend this restaurant.
The prices were absurd and the portion so small. We payed 12 euros for a bottle of water and 22 euros for a glass of wine. We only stayed because since it was off season it was our only option available at the day. Do not recommend
Yes, its expensive. But if you accept 20 EUR per drink for a stunning foto, maybe 1x in your holiday it could be worth it. We got sufficient snacks included in 2 drinks. There is also music. Its a floating sitting place, where do you find this. Your choice.

The ratings here are unfairly low. This is Portofino-what do people expect? Quality, location, atmosphere and service fully justify the level. it is extremely overpriced for this quality. COLA ZERO WAS 17 EUROS. AND ICE TEA WAS 15 EUROS. too expensive. we ate for 2 people only. order 2 pesto pasta and one fish of the day (38 euro) the portions are too small. fish was max 50 gr not enough and absolutely no value of money unfortunately, i would have understood if it costed 20 euros.
