Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore
Four marble lions — two red, two white — stand guard at the entrances of Santa Maria Maggiore, and they've become so associated with Bergamo that locals barely notice them anymore. You probably will. The basilica sits on Piazza Duomo in the upper town, its facade a layered argument in white Candoglia and pink Verona marble, though the main entrance is sealed: the church once joined directly to the Bishops' Palace, and that side has never fully opened to the street.
Inside, centuries of patronage accumulate in close quarters. Bronze candelabra from 1597 flank the presbytery. Giottesque frescoes from 1347 survive in the right transept, partially buried under later plasterwork. And carved into the wall between the northern doors, medieval measurements — the cavezzo and the brachium — record what merchants and weavers once needed to know.

Return visitors tend to make straight for the wooden choir, where Lorenzo Lotto's biblical scenes were executed in marquetry between 1524 and 1555 — a medium that rewards slow looking. The Treasure Museum, open Thursday through Sunday only, is easy to miss on a first pass and worth planning around.
The story behind Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore
The basilica began as a vow. In 1133, with plague moving through northern Italy, the citizens of Bergamo promised the Virgin Mary a new church if the city was spared. Work started in 1137 on a site already layered with history — an eighth-century church, and beneath that, a Roman temple. The high altar was consecrated in 1185, the presbytery and transepts finished by 1187, though financial troubles stretched construction across the following two centuries.
The bell tower went up from 1436, completed by Bertolasio Moroni. Pietro Isabello finished the southwestern portal in 1521. The wooden choir, designed by Bernardo Zenale and Andrea Previtali, received its extraordinary Lorenzo Lotto reliefs between 1524 and 1555. In 1805, composer Simone Mayr founded a music conservatory within these walls — Gaetano Donizetti was among its early students — and the school operated here until 1908.

From Bergamo station, bus line 1 runs every ten minutes to the lower funicular, which carries you up to Città Alta. The basilica is 250 metres from the Viale delle Mura stop on lines 1 and 10. Entry is €5 for non-residents; free during religious services. The Treasure Museum keeps shorter hours: Thursday to Sunday, 14:30–17:30.

The interior is absolutely magnificent, with beautiful icons, paintings and an extraordinary collection of tapestries adorning the walls. The tapestries are particularly remarkable and add a unique sense of history and grandeur to the basilica. It is clear that great care is taken to preserve every exhibit, piece of church furniture and decorative element. Everything is exceptionally well maintained, clean and presented with great attention to detail. The atmosphere is both peaceful and inspiring, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the artistic and historical treasures of this wonderful basilica. A truly memorable place to visit in Bergamo and highly recommended to anyone interested in art, history and architecture.

One of the most magnificent churches we have been to - don't think about it, just pay the ticket and get inside, you are in for an eye-treat! There is also a virtual guide availanle by scanning the QR codes around the various parts of the church. The atmosphere was even better since a young man was also playing the organ and added to the experience.

A historical Catholic Church. In the center of the citta alta (old town of Bergamo). There is a ticket to enter but it is worth every cent. Such a beautiful church.
