Anillo Verde (Green Ring)
Vitoria-Gasteiz's Anillo Verde — Green Ring — is a genuinely remarkable piece of urban planning: a near-continuous 33-kilometre belt of parks, wetlands, woodlands and nature reserves encircling the entire city, purpose-built to reconnect residents with nature without ever leaving the city limits. It earned Vitoria the European Green Capital award in 2012 and remains one of Europe's finest examples
The Five Parks and What Makes Each Special
The ring is divided into five distinct park areas, each with its own character. Salburua, to the east, is the showstopper: a restored wetland complex of lagoons and reed beds where a herd of semi-wild fallow deer roams freely, herons stalk the shallows, and on winter mornings the mist sits low over the water in a scene more Scottish highland than Spanish city.
Armentia, to the southwest, is a dense oak and pine woodland with a Romanesque basilica at its heart — the Basílica de San Prudencio, dating to the 12th century — making it equally rewarding for history lovers as for walkers. The Zabalgana sector to the west offers wide-open meadows ideal for cycling and picnicking.
How to Explore It
The full 33-kilometre circuit is manageable as a day-long bike ride — the city's Muovete bike-share scheme has stations at multiple park entry points, and the paths are largely flat and well-signed. Walkers can dip into individual sections; a 2-hour loop through Salburua wetlands is one of the most rewarding short walks in the entire Basque Country.
The Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza at Salburua (free entry) provides excellent context on the wetland restoration project and has a rooftop observation platform for birdwatching. Spring migration season (April–May) and autumn (September–October) bring the greatest diversity of species.
