Marché du Vieux-Port (Harbour Market)
Every Sunday morning the quayside below Villefranche's citadel fills with market stalls selling everything from violet artichokes and locally caught sea urchins to handmade ceramics and lavender sachets — all with the deep-blue bay as a backdrop.
What to Buy and Eat
The food stalls are the main event: look for tapenade made with Niçoise olives, socca (crispy chickpea-flour pancakes cooked in a wood-fired copper pan), pan bagnat sandwiches stuffed with tuna and local vegetables, and fresh fromage de chèvre from nearby hill farms.
In spring, violet artichokes from the Var and tiny courgettes with their flowers still attached appear in abundance; in summer, tables groan under Marmande tomatoes, white peaches and fragrant basil sold by the bunch.
A vendor near the citadel steps usually sells freshly shucked sea urchins (oursins) with a squeeze of lemon — one of the most purely Mediterranean snacks imaginable.
Beyond the Food
Artisan stalls offer hand-painted Provençal fabric, olive-wood cutting boards, locally made soap from Menton and watercolour prints of the bay — the quality is noticeably higher than the tourist-trap markets in Nice.
The market wraps up by around 13:00, after which locals drift to the waterfront cafés for a glass of rosé and moules marinières. Timing a Sunday morning visit to end with lunch on the quay is a near-perfect Riviera experience.
