Museo Nacional de Escultura (Colegio de San Gregorio)
Housed inside one of the most extravagant Isabelline Gothic buildings on earth, the Museo Nacional de Escultura holds the greatest collection of Spanish polychrome religious sculpture anywhere — an art form so visceral and emotionally raw it stops visitors cold. The Building Is Half the Show
The façade of the 15th-century Colegio de San Gregorio is a tour de force of stone carving — wild men, pomegranate trees, heraldic beasts and intricate lacework chiselled into limestone with an almost obsessive energy. Pause on the street (Calle Cadenas de San Gregorio) before entering; photographs rarely capture how three-dimensional and alive the surface actually is.
The interior courtyard, with its double-tiered Gothic arcade, is equally breathtaking and often empty of crowds, making it one of the most peaceful spots in the city for quiet contemplation.
The Sculptures Inside
Alonso Berruguete's retablo from the church of San Benito el Real (c. 1532) is the centrepiece — its writhing, elongated figures painted in ochre, crimson and gold anticipate the emotional intensity of Baroque art by a full century. Juan de Juni's 'Entombment of Christ' in the same hall is a masterclass in sculpted grief; every face tells a different story.
Allow at least two hours. The museum also holds an important collection of paintings, furniture and decorative arts spanning the 15th to 18th centuries, spread across beautifully restored rooms in the adjacent Palacio del Villena.
