Val d'Orcia Viewpoint, Monticchiello Road
The winding road between Pienza and Monticchiello delivers the single most iconic Tuscan landscape you have ever seen on a poster — luminous green hills, lone farmhouses and ruler-straight cypress avenues rolling toward Monte Amiata under an enormous sky.
The Classic Belvedere Shot
Pull over anywhere along the SP53 between Pienza and Monticchiello in the early morning and you will find a view that looks almost too perfect to be real: soft ridgelines striped with ploughed fields, a solitary Agriturismo perched on a hilltop and a line of cypresses casting long shadows.
The most photographed single spot is the cypress-lined driveway leading to the Agriturismo Baccoleno, visible from the road just south of Pienza — it appears on virtually every Tuscany travel feature ever published.
Spring (April–May) brings vivid green fields and wildflowers; late June to July turns the wheat gold; November reveals a moody, mist-draped version that is arguably more beautiful than the postcard.
Pienza: The Perfect Renaissance Town
While you are in the area, Pienza itself is a 15-minute walk from any parking area and absolutely worth an hour: Pope Pius II rebuilt it in the 1460s as a model Renaissance city, and the compact historic centre — cathedral, palazzo, main street — is almost entirely intact.
The town's other claim to fame is Pecorino di Pienza, a sheep's milk cheese aged in walnut leaves, grape marc or clay; buy it directly from the small shops lining Corso Rossellino.
From the garden terrace behind the cathedral (Giardino Diaz), the ground drops away sharply to reveal the full Val d'Orcia panorama — one of the finest free viewpoints in all of Tuscany.
