Lavanderia a Gettoni Cocktail Bar
Behind an entirely convincing façade of spinning washing machines and detergent dispensers in the San Salvario neighbourhood, a concealed door opens into one of Turin's most inventive cocktail bars. The gimmick would be enough, but the drinks — built around Piedmontese vermouths, local amari, and seasonal fruit — are genuinely excellent.
Finding It and What to Drink
The entrance is on Via Principe Tommaso, and the laundrette front is so convincing that first-timers sometimes load a machine before noticing the bar. Push the door marked with a small soap-bubble logo and descend into a low-lit space of exposed brick and vintage appliances repurposed as shelving.
The house Negroni uses Punt e Mes vermouth from the nearby Carpano distillery — the same house that invented vermouth in Turin in 1786 — and it is noticeably superior to the standard recipe. Ask the bartender for a 'Piemontese twist' on whatever you'd normally order and you'll get something rooted in local terroir.
San Salvario: Turin's Most Liveable Quarter
The bar sits in San Salvario, a dense, multicultural neighbourhood south of the city centre that has the highest concentration of aperitivo bars per square metre in Turin. Via Madama Cristina and the surrounding streets fill up from 6 pm with an entirely local crowd — this is where university lecturers, architects, and musicians do their drinking.
The Saturday market on Piazza Madama Cristina is smaller and calmer than Porta Palazzo, specialising in organic produce and artisan bread. It's the ideal place to assemble a picnic before heading to the nearby Parco del Valentino along the Po.
