Sierra Espuña Regional Park (Totana Gateway)
Totana sits at the eastern gateway to Sierra Espuña, one of Murcia's most rewarding natural parks. Reforested in the early 20th century with half a million pines, the sierra now feels ancient and wild — a proper mountain escape less than 15 minutes from the town plaza.
Trails Through the Pines
The PR-MU 26 trail departs near the sanctuary road and climbs through fragrant Aleppo and black pine forest to the Barranco de Enmedio, a seasonal stream gorge where the air drops noticeably cool even in July. Golden eagles and Bonelli's eagles are regularly spotted riding thermals above the limestone ridgeline.
For a longer adventure, the ascent to Morrón de Totana (1,583 m) — the park's second-highest peak — takes around four hours return and delivers 360-degree views stretching on clear days to the Mediterranean coast and the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.
Snow Wells: A Forgotten Industry
One of the sierra's strangest highlights is its collection of pozos de nieve — stone-lined snow wells dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Workers packed them with winter snow that was then transported by mule to coastal cities as a luxury refrigerant; several wells near the Cruz del Alto pass are beautifully restored and open to visit.
The park's visitor centre at Ricardo Codorníu has trail maps, wildlife displays and rangers who can advise on current conditions — always worth a stop before heading deeper into the sierra.
