Santuario de La Santa (Santa Eulalia Shrine)
Perched on a dramatic rocky spur above Totana, the 15th-century Santuario de La Santa is the spiritual heart of the entire comarca. The winding road up rewards you with a fortress-like complex of chapels, courtyards and panoramic terraces that feel frozen in medieval devotion.
A Shrine Built into the Rock
The sanctuary clings to the Sierra Espuña foothills at around 800 metres, its ochre stone walls merging seamlessly with the cliff face. Inside, the camarín — the jewel-box chamber behind the main altar — houses the venerated image of Santa Eulalia, draped in elaborate embroidered robes and surrounded by votive offerings left by generations of grateful pilgrims.
A network of covered walkways and small chapels winds through the complex, each nook lit by candles and decorated with ex-votos: tiny silver limbs, faded photographs and handwritten notes that together form a deeply human archive of hope and gratitude.
The Climb and the Views
Even non-pilgrims make the trip for the views alone. From the upper terrace you can trace the Guadalentín Valley all the way south, with the patchwork of citrus groves, almond orchards and ceramic-tile rooftops of Totana spread below like a living map.
Early morning visits are magical: mist clings to the pine-covered ridges of Sierra Espuña behind the shrine, and the light turns the stone a warm amber. On the feast day of Santa Eulalia (around 12 February) the road fills with pilgrims on foot carrying candles — one of Murcia's most moving traditional spectacles.
