Barrio de Los Europeos & Paseo Vista Alegre

The Paseo Vista Alegre is Torrevieja's most animated seafront promenade — a palm-lined boulevard that runs south from the old fishing harbour past the Casino, the modernist Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción and into the lively Los Europeos neighbourhood where terrace bars fill every evening with a gloriously mixed crowd of Spaniards, Scandinavians and expats.

The promenade at golden hour

The paseo is best experienced from around 19:00 when the heat softens, locals emerge for their evening paseo ritual and the sky over the Mediterranean turns amber. The stretch between the old port and the Casino is lined with ornamental palms and benches facing the sea — find a spot and watch the fishing boats return with the day's catch.

The Modernista Casino building, dating from 1934, is worth a close look for its decorative tilework facade. It still functions as a private members' club but the exterior and the adjacent garden terrace are freely accessible and make a handsome backdrop for evening photographs.

Where to eat and drink on the paseo

Bar El Cura, tucked into a side street just off the paseo near Calle Ramón Gallud, is a standing-room-only tapas bar beloved by locals for its enormous portions of patatas bravas and ice-cold Estrella Damm on tap. It is the kind of place where you order by pointing and pay in cash — no menu, no fuss, no tourists.

For something more relaxed, La Taberna del Puerto on the harbour front does excellent tigres (stuffed mussels in spiced béchamel) and a rotating slate of daily raciones. The terrace looks directly onto the fishing boats and the service is unhurried in the best possible way. Budget around €20 per person for a generous spread of tapas and a beer.
