Mercado Municipal de Torremolinos
Tucked just off the main tourist drag on Calle Mercado, the town's covered municipal market is where local housewives, restaurant chefs and curious travellers converge every morning to buy the day's food. It is small, unpretentious, and completely authentic — the antidote to every overpriced seafront restaurant in the city.
What to Buy
The fish and shellfish counters are the main event: whole dorada, lubina and boquerones arrive from the Málaga fish auction in the early hours, and the selection is noticeably fresher and cheaper than anything sold on the beachfront. Cured jamón from the Sierra Nevada hangs from the ceiling of the charcutería stalls at the back.
The fruit and vegetable section celebrates whatever Andalusia's interior is producing that week — fat Coín tomatoes in summer, blood oranges from the Axarquía in winter, and avocados from the nearby tropical coast virtually year-round.
Eating Inside the Market
Several bar-counters operate inside and immediately outside the market, serving market workers and early-rising locals. Order a tostada con tomate — toasted bread rubbed with ripe tomato and drizzled with local olive oil — and a cortado for a breakfast that costs under €3 and beats any hotel buffet.
On Friday mornings a small organic and artisan producers' stall sets up at the entrance, selling local honey, goat's cheese from the Axarquía mountains and homemade preserves.
