Senda Ecológica del Tajo

While most visitors spend their time inside Toledo's walls, the Senda Ecológica del Tajo — a waymarked riverside path that loops around the base of the city's rocky promontory — offers a completely different perspective: the full medieval skyline towering above you as kingfishers dart across the olive-green Tagus below. The 8-kilometre circuit takes about two hours and requires no special equipmen

The route and what you'll see

The path begins at the Puente de Alcántara, the Roman bridge on the city's eastern side, and follows the north bank of the Tagus westward past ancient mills, eroded cliff faces and dense riverside woodland of poplar and tamarisk. After about 4 km it crosses the Puente de San Martín — the 14th-century arched bridge — and returns along the south bank past the Mirador del Valle.

Wildlife is genuinely rewarding: grey herons fish the shallows year-round, Bonelli's eagles nest in the cliffs above, and in spring the path is lined with wild iris and flowering rosemary. Otters have been recorded in this stretch of the Tagus, though a sighting requires patience and an early start.

Planning your walk

The path is well-signed and mostly flat with one moderate climb near the Puente de San Martín. Wear trainers rather than sandals as some sections are rocky. Carry water — there are no cafés on the route itself, though both bridge ends have bars within 200 m.

The walk is best in spring (March–May) for wildflowers and bird activity, and in autumn (October–November) for clear air and the low golden light that turns the city walls amber. Avoid July and August midday heat; if you go in summer, start by 8 am.
