Dinópolis Teruel and the Jurassic Badlands of the Maestrazgo

Teruel sits at the heart of one of Europe's richest dinosaur fossil beds, and the city leans into this identity with Dinópolis — a serious palaeontology theme park and museum that houses actual dinosaur skeletons excavated from the surrounding hills. Pair a visit with a drive into the red-rock badlands of the Maestrazgo range and you have one of the most unusual nature-meets-science day trips in S

Dinópolis: More Than a Theme Park

Dinópolis is anchored by the Museo Aragonés de Paleontología, which displays genuine fossils including the skeleton of Turiasaurus riodevensis — one of the largest dinosaurs ever found in Europe, unearthed just 35 km from Teruel. The museum sections are rigorous and well-curated, aimed as much at adults as children, while the surrounding park adds rides and shows for families.

The star exhibit is the near-complete skeleton of a sauropod that would have weighed around 40 tonnes in life. Standing next to it in the exhibition hall is one of those rare moments of genuine awe that no photograph quite captures.

The Badlands Beyond the City

Drive south from Teruel toward Riodeva and you enter a landscape of eroded red and ochre badlands — cárcavas — where the fossil beds that produced Turiasaurus are still actively excavated. The scenery is stark, otherworldly and almost entirely tourist-free. The village of Riodeva has a small outdoor fossil trail where you can see dinosaur footprints in situ.

Continue into the Maestrazgo Natural Park for dramatic limestone gorges, medieval hilltop villages like Cantavieja and Mirambel, and walking trails through pine forest at elevations above 1,500 metres.
