Pic du Midi de Bigorre Observatory

Perched at 2,877 metres above sea level and reached by a vertiginous cable car from La Mongie, the Pic du Midi de Bigorre offers what many astronomers and mountain lovers consider the finest panoramic viewpoint in the entire Pyrenean chain. On a clear day the view stretches from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean.

The Journey Up

The Télécabine du Pic du Midi lifts you from La Mongie ski station (about 45 minutes south of Tarbes by car) in a single dramatic stage, swinging over snowfields and granite ridges before depositing you at the summit platform.

The temperature at the top averages 8–10 °C cooler than the valley even in July, so pack a fleece regardless of the season — the wind on the open terraces can be biting and exhilarating in equal measure.

What Awaits at the Summit

The 19th-century observatory buildings are still active research facilities; visitors can peer through historic telescopes and learn about the solar observations that have been conducted here continuously since 1873, making this one of the longest-running mountain observatories in the world.

The terrace railing at the summit's edge is the kind of spot where experienced mountain travellers go quiet: a 360-degree sweep of snow-capped peaks, deep green valleys and, on exceptional days, the silver glint of both the Bay of Biscay and the Gulf of Lion simultaneously.

Night Stays and Stargazing

The Pic du Midi offers a unique 'Nuit aux Étoiles' experience where small groups sleep overnight in the observatory, wake before dawn and watch the Milky Way arc overhead in some of the darkest skies in southern France.

Book the overnight programme months in advance as places are strictly limited and it sells out through the summer season almost immediately after release.
