Stresa Weekly Market (Via Principessa Margherita)
Every Friday morning the streets behind Stresa's lakefront promenade fill with market stalls stretching along Via Principessa Margherita and spilling into the surrounding lanes. It is an unpretentious, working local market — the kind where residents actually shop — rather than a tourist-facing craft fair.
What to Buy
Produce stalls groan with seasonal lake-district vegetables: radicchio di Lusia, porcini mushrooms in autumn, white asparagus in spring, and fat tomatoes from Piedmontese kitchen gardens. Cheese vendors carry local tome, toma piemontese and aged grana padano cut to order from enormous wheels.
Alongside food you will find fabric merchants, household goods, clothing and shoe stalls — the full, slightly chaotic ecosystem of a genuine Italian mercato settimanale. Prices are noticeably lower than the resort shops on the promenade.
Timing and Tips
The market runs from roughly 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Arrive before 10 a.m. for the best selection of fresh produce and to avoid the crush. Bring a reusable bag; most vendors do not supply plastic carriers.
After shopping, walk two minutes to Bar Verbano or one of the caffè on Piazza Cadorna for a cornetto and a proper macchiato — the ideal way to absorb the morning's rhythm before the tourist day begins.
