Mercato della Piazza del Mercato
Tucked behind the Palazzo Pubblico in the shadow of the city walls, Siena's weekly Wednesday and Saturday morning market is where nonnas squeeze tomatoes, farmers unload pecorino wheels and the city reveals its unfiltered, everyday self. No tourist menus here — just produce, chatter and the smell of fresh bread.
What to Buy
The stalls groan with seasonal Tuscan produce: porcini mushrooms in autumn, fat white truffles shaved to order in November, bright-red Pachino tomatoes in summer and bundles of cavolo nero destined for ribollita in winter.
Local vendors sell aged Pecorino di Pienza in various stages — fresco, semi-stagionato and stagionato — alongside finocchiona salami, lardo di Colonnata and jars of saffron from nearby San Gimignano. Bring cash and a small cooler bag.
Beyond the Food
Clothing, household goods and leather goods stalls fill the outer edges of the market, making it a genuine neighbourhood event rather than a curated food experience for visitors.
Grab a paper cone of fried dough from the street fryer at the market's edge — it costs less than €2 and is the most honest snack in Siena.
Getting There
The market spills along Via del Mercato and Piazza del Mercato, directly behind the Palazzo Pubblico — follow the crowds downhill from the campo and you cannot miss it.
Arrive between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. for the best selection; most stalls begin packing up by noon.
