Valley of the Temples, Agrigento
Standing on a limestone ridge above the sea, the Valley of the Temples is one of the best-preserved ancient Greek complexes outside Greece itself. Seven Doric temples dating from the 5th century BC glow amber at sunset in a way that stops conversation cold.
The Temples Up Close
The Temple of Concordia is the star — almost entirely intact, its 34 columns still casting long shadows across the almond-blossom-dotted hillside. Built around 440 BC, it survived the centuries partly because early Christians converted it into a church, filling the gaps between columns with stone walls.
The Temple of Juno crowns the eastern ridge and rewards the uphill walk with a panoramic sweep toward the coast. Look for the dark scorch marks on the stone — ancient evidence of a Carthaginian attack in 406 BC that still feels viscerally real.
Visiting Smart
The archaeological park opens at 08:30 and the light is softest in the first two hours of morning, before tour buses arrive. Buy a combined ticket that includes the excellent Museo Archeologico Regionale Pietro Griffo in town, where the reconstructed telamon giant from the Temple of Olympian Zeus is worth an hour alone.
Night visits run on certain evenings from spring through autumn, when the temples are floodlit and the crowds thin to almost nothing. Check the Parco Valle dei Templi website for the current schedule — it changes seasonally.
