Every Thursday and Saturday morning, the Place Aristide Briand in the heart of Sète transforms into one of the most aromatic and colourful markets on the Hérault coast. It is the place where locals actually shop, not a tourist showcase, and the difference is palpable.
What to Buy and Eat
The stalls pile high with tielle sétoise — the town's iconic octopus-and-tomato pastry — alongside fresh oysters and mussels pulled that morning from the Étang de Thau, violet artichokes from the Roussillon plain, and wheels of Pélardon goat's cheese from the Cévennes hills.
A cluster of olive and tapenade merchants near the central fountain will press samples into your hand before you even ask; budget at least half an hour just for tasting.
The Atmosphere and Surroundings
The market spills into the side streets around the square, where fabric sellers, ceramics vendors and second-hand book stalls add a flea-market layer to the fresh-produce core. Grab a socca or a pan bagnat from one of the snack stands and eat it on the spot like everyone else does.
After shopping, the café terraces ringing the square fill up fast; a glass of Picpoul de Pinet from a nearby vignerón stall is the perfect excuse to sit and watch the organised chaos.
