Mercato Comunale di Sestri Levante
Tucked just off Piazza della Repubblica, Sestri Levante's covered municipal market is where the town actually feeds itself — and where a curious traveller can taste the difference between supermarket pesto and the real thing in under ten minutes.
What to Buy
The market specialises in hyper-local Ligurian produce: Taggiasca olives cured in brine, jars of hand-pounded pesto made with Genoese PDO basil, focaccia di Recco (the region's thin, cheese-filled flatbread) sold warm by the slice, and fresh pasta such as trofie and corzetti stamped with family crests.
Look for the stalls selling farinata — a chickpea pancake baked in a wood-fired copper pan — which is eaten standing at the counter with a glass of Vermentino. It costs around €2 a slice and is one of the most satisfying things you will eat in Liguria.
Fresh Fish Counter
The fish section at the back of the market is supplied by the small fishing fleet that still operates out of Sestri Levante's harbour. Arrive by 8 am to see the full catch: anchovies, sea bream, octopus, mussels from the nearby Golfo del Tigullio and, in season, the prized local muscoli (mussels) steamed open right at the stall.
Even if you have no kitchen, watching the fishmongers work and smelling the salt-and-iodine air of a functioning Italian fish market is a sensory experience worth setting the alarm for.
When to Go
The market runs Tuesday and Saturday mornings from roughly 7 am to 1 pm, with Saturday being the larger and livelier of the two days when farmers from the surrounding hills bring down seasonal vegetables, local honey and bunches of dried herbs.
Go hungry, bring a small tote bag and budget around €15–20 for a very satisfying breakfast-and-provisions haul.
