Roof Terrace of the Laurentian Library Cloister
Tucked inside the cloister of San Lorenzo, a little-known upper walkway offers an elevated view over the terracotta roofscape of the neighbourhood with the Duomo's dome looming behind you — and almost no other tourists. It's one of the most peaceful elevated spots in central Florence.
Finding the Viewpoint
Enter the Basilica di San Lorenzo and pass through the left-hand door into the first cloister, a quiet Renaissance courtyard with an orange tree at its centre. A staircase in the far corner leads up to the loggia level, from which you look directly across the rooftops toward Brunelleschi's dome.
The angle is different from the classic Piazzale Michelangelo shot — here you are low and intimate with the city's terracotta tiles, and the Duomo rises unexpectedly close, framed by chimney pots and TV aerials in a very lived-in way.
Best Time to Visit
Morning light between 9 and 11 am falls directly onto the dome from the east, making the white marble ribs glow. In summer the cloister below fills with shade and the temperature drops noticeably — a welcome relief from the Piazza del Duomo crowds a few hundred metres away.
The cloister is also a favourite spot for Florentine art students who come to sketch the proportions of the arcade; don't be surprised to find someone with a sketchbook in the corner.
