Mercado Medieval de El Escorial
Every year in late August the streets and squares around the monastery are taken over by one of the most atmospheric medieval markets in the Madrid region, transforming the already dramatic granite town into something that feels genuinely pulled from the 16th century. Jugglers, falconers, blacksmiths and spice merchants fill the cobblestones for four days.
What You'll Find
Around 200 stalls spread through the historic centre selling hand-forged ironwork, leather goods, artisan cheeses, honey, ceramics, hand-dyed textiles and spices piled into fragrant pyramids. The quality is noticeably higher than at many regional markets — the organizers curate vendors carefully.
Food stalls offer roasted meats on open fires, honey-glazed nuts, churros, and mulled wine served in clay cups. In the evenings, theatrical performances and torch-lit processions make the monastery's floodlit façade an even more extraordinary backdrop.
Beyond August: The Weekly Market
Outside the medieval festival, El Escorial holds a regular weekly street market every Thursday morning in the Calle del Rey and surrounding streets, where local farmers sell seasonal produce, cured meats, olive oils and fresh flowers. It is modest in scale but genuinely local — very few tourists find their way here.
Arrive between 9 and 11 am for the best selection of fruit and vegetables from the fertile Alberche valley below the sierra. The stall selling Torta del Casar and other Extremaduran cheeses is a consistent highlight.
