Museo de la Aeronáutica y el Espacio, San Javier

San Javier is home to the Spanish Air Force's main pilot training academy, and its aviation museum is one of the finest of its kind in the country. More than 40 historic aircraft are displayed across hangars and an outdoor apron, from Second World War trainers to Cold War jet fighters.

What's Inside

Highlights include a Heinkel He 111 bomber, a CASA 2111 (the Spanish-built version), a Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star and a Mirage III — all in remarkable condition. Interpretive panels trace the history of Spanish military aviation from the 1920s onwards.

A dedicated space section covers Spanish astronaut Pedro Duque's missions aboard the International Space Station, with genuine mission equipment and spacesuits on display. Children are particularly captivated by the full-scale rocket models outside.

Visiting Practically

The museum sits directly on the perimeter of the active military airbase, and guided visits are required — these are free and run on specific days, so book ahead via the Spanish Air Force website. On visit days you may also see training aircraft landing overhead, which adds an unexpected thrill.

The annual San Javier International Air Festival (Festival Aéreo Internacional de San Javier), held each July, transforms the base into one of Europe's great airshows with display teams including the Patrulla Águila, Spain's equivalent of the Red Arrows.
