Mercato della Settimana — Thursday Market
Every Thursday morning, Viale dei Fossi — the broad avenue that runs just outside the town's medieval walls — transforms into a lively weekly market where farmers, cheese mongers and clothing stalls set up side by side. It is the most authentic slice of everyday Sienese-province life you will find in this otherwise tourist-polished town.
What to Buy and Taste
Head straight for the produce end of the market, where growers from the surrounding Val d'Elsa sell seasonal vegetables, fresh pecorino at various stages of ageing, local honey, and hand-tied bundles of dried saffron — San Gimignano holds a DOP designation for its own Zafferano di San Gimignano, one of the finest in Italy.
Cured meats from the Siena hills — finocchiona salami fragrant with fennel seeds, and paper-thin lardo — make perfect picnic supplies to carry up to the park inside the walls.
Navigating the Stalls
The market runs roughly from 08:00 to 13:00; go before 10:00 for the best selection and to chat with vendors before the tourist wave arrives from the tour buses.
Bring cash — many stalls do not accept cards — and a tote bag, because plastic bags are scarce and the saffron packaging is beautiful enough to double as a gift.
