Terrasse de la Cathédrale Saint-Pierre
Climb to the terrace beside the soaring Gothic tower of Cathédrale Saint-Pierre and you are rewarded with a panorama that sweeps from the silver ribbon of the Charente river across the red-tiled rooftops of the old town to the vine-stitched hills of the Saintonge beyond. It is the single best vantage point in the city and it costs nothing.
The cathedral itself
Construction of Saint-Pierre began in the 12th century and stretched across four hundred years, giving the building a layered personality — Romanesque chapels sit beneath soaring Flamboyant Gothic vaulting, and the unfinished north tower, truncated by the Wars of Religion, gives the façade an endearingly lopsided silhouette.
Inside, seek out the carved 16th-century choir stalls and the organ case, both survivors of the Huguenot raids that gutted much of the interior in the 1560s. The quality of light through the clerestory windows in the afternoon is exceptional.
Making the most of the view
The exterior terrace on the south side of the cathedral, accessible via the small garden off Rue Saint-Michel, provides an elevated platform above the old-town roofline without requiring any tower climb.
Sunset is the prime moment: the Charente catches the orange light and the Abbaye aux Dames bell tower glows on the opposite bank. Bring a wide-angle lens or simply sit on the low stone wall and take it in slowly.
