Marché de la Place des Lices
Every Tuesday and Thursday morning, Saint-Tropez's most beloved square transforms into a riot of colour, scent and chatter that has drawn everyone from Brigitte Bardot to local fishermen since the 19th century. Arrive before 9 a.m. to watch stallholders arrange towers of violet artichokes, braided garlic and sun-blushed tomatoes before the crowds descend.
What to buy
The food stalls are the heart of the market — look for tapenade blended to order, wheels of local chèvre wrapped in chestnut leaves, and fat Cavaillon melons that perfume the air from ten metres away.
Beyond produce, antique dealers and fabric vendors line the outer ring, selling Provençal cotton prints, vintage Riviera posters and hand-thrown pottery that makes for far more personal souvenirs than anything sold on the port.
How to enjoy it like a local
Grab a pastis or a café crème at the Café des Arts on the square's edge and watch the social theatre unfold — this is where Tropéziens actually meet, gossip and argue over the price of courgettes.
When you've finished shopping, duck into the shaded side streets directly behind the square to find smaller artisan stalls that rarely make it into guidebooks.
