Intra-Muros Walled City
Saint-Malo's granite ramparts encircle one of France's best-preserved walled cities, a place where corsair history seeps from every cobblestone. A full circuit of the walls takes roughly an hour and rewards you with panoramic Atlantic views at every turn.
The Rampart Walk
Begin at the Porte Saint-Vincent, the city's grand ceremonial gate, and follow the chemin de ronde clockwise for a 1.8-kilometre loop above the rooftops. The walls rise up to 9 metres and were largely rebuilt after Allied bombing in 1944 flattened 80 percent of the old town.
At the Bastion de la Hollande you get the classic postcard shot: the tidal islet of Grand Bé with Mont-Saint-Michel hazily visible on clear days. Linger here at golden hour when the granite turns the colour of warm honey.
Inside the Walls
The streets below are a tight grid of tall townhouses rebuilt in the original Breton-granite style, giving the city a coherent, almost theatrical beauty. Rue de Dinan and Rue Saint-Thomas are the best lanes for browsing independent crêperies, cider shops and nautical-chart sellers.
Don't miss the Cathédrale Saint-Vincent, whose nave dates to the 12th century and whose modern stained-glass windows — installed after the war — cast extraordinary blue and gold light across the stone floor on sunny mornings.
