Corniche Basque and Plage d'Erromardie
The Corniche Basque is the stretch of dramatic coastal road and cliff path running north of Saint-Jean-de-Luz toward Bidart, where the Pyrenees finally meet the sea in a series of rust-red sandstone cliffs and hidden beaches. It is the most scenically intense section of the entire Basque coast.
Driving and Walking the Corniche
The D918 coastal road offers pull-off viewpoints above the cliffs where the geology is extraordinary — layers of compressed limestone and flysch (dark shale) have been tilted almost vertical by tectonic forces, creating a striped, folded cliff face that geologists travel from across Europe to study. The most dramatic section is near the village of Guéthary.
For walkers, the GR10 long-distance trail follows the cliff tops along much of this route. A manageable 8 km section from Saint-Jean-de-Luz north to Bidart takes around 2.5 hours and rewards with views that change character every few hundred metres as the cliff angle shifts.
Plage d'Erromardie
Just north of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Plage d'Erromardie is a wide, gently shelving sandy beach that catches less wind than the town's main beach and is consequently calmer for swimming. It is popular with local families precisely because it avoids the summer crowds that pack the central Grande Plage.
The beach is backed by a small campsite and a handful of snack bars rather than a promenade of boutiques, which gives it a refreshingly low-key character. Surf schools operate here in summer, and the wave quality — consistent but not overwhelming — makes it good for beginners.
