Côte Sainte-Catherine
A steep but rewarding 30-minute walk or short drive east of the city centre brings you to this wooded hillside viewpoint, which delivers the single best panorama of Rouen's skyline — a bristling silhouette of Gothic spires above a bend in the Seine. Turner painted this exact view in 1832.
The Walk Up and What You See
The most satisfying approach is the marked footpath from the suburb of Bonsecours, winding through beech and oak forest before the trees suddenly part to reveal the whole city spread below you across the river valley.
On a clear day you can pick out the cathedral, the church of Saint-Ouen, the Tour Jeanne d'Arc and the modern Flaubert Bridge all at once — bring a map or use a labelled panorama board at the viewpoint to name every spire.
Sunrise, Sunset and Practical Tips
Sunrise is magical here: low mist often fills the Seine valley in autumn and spring, leaving only the spire tips poking through a white sea — a photograph that looks almost too good to be real.
The hilltop also holds the small pilgrimage chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, worth a quick look for its ornate 19th-century interior and the votive offerings left by sailors' families.
