Mercado de Abastos de Ronda
Tucked into a handsome early-20th-century building on Calle Virgen de la Paz, Ronda's covered market is where local chefs and grandmothers shop shoulder to shoulder for serrano hams, freshly caught trout from the Serranía, and mounds of locally grown almonds. It is the most honest cross-section of daily Ronda life you will find.
What to Buy
The Serranía de Ronda produces some of the best jamón serrano outside of Jabugo, and market vendors will slice it to order with visible pride. Pick up a vacuum-packed wedge to carry home — most stalls are happy to advise on airline-friendly portions.
Local cheeses made from the milk of Payoya goats are a regional treasure rarely found outside the area. Ask for queso de cabra Payoya curado for the aged version, which has a nutty, complex flavour that pairs beautifully with local honey sold at the same stalls.
Morning Ritual
Arrive between 09:00 and 11:00 on a Saturday when the market is at its most animated and a small farmers' section spills onto the surrounding pavement. Stall holders set out seasonal wild mushrooms, fresh herbs, and hand-pressed olive oil from groves in the nearby Genal Valley.
The bar inside the market serves a classic desayuno andaluz — strong coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, and toast with tomato and olive oil — for under €3. It is the best-value breakfast in Ronda, full stop.
