Marché de Rochefort (Place Colbert)
Place Colbert, Rochefort's grand arcaded square, transforms into one of the most atmospheric food markets in Nouvelle-Aquitaine every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning. Locals have been buying their oysters, Charentais melons and pineau here for generations.
What to Buy and What to Eat
The stalls spill out under the 17th-century arcades and into the open square, piled with Marennes-Oléron oysters sold by the dozen, fat Charentais melons in summer, jambon de pays, goat's cheeses from the bocage and the local sweet butter that makes everything taste better.
Saturday is the biggest day — arrive before 10:00 to catch the full spread before the choice cuts and best cheeses disappear. Several vendors sell ready-to-eat portions of oysters with a squeeze of lemon right there at the stall.
The Square Itself
Place Colbert is architecturally striking — a harmonious ensemble of 17th-century stone arcades designed as part of Rochefort's planned navy town, and listed as a historic monument. Even without the market it rewards a slow coffee at one of the café terraces.
The central fountain and the surrounding hôtels particuliers give the market a backdrop that feels genuinely historic rather than tourist-dressed.
