Vallée de l'Aisne & Forêt des Ardennes Day Trips

Rethel sits at the southern edge of the Ardennes massif, making it an ideal base for exploring the dense oak and beech forests that begin almost immediately north of the town, as well as the tranquil Aisne river valley that stretches east and west through open farmland and wooded gorges. Within 20 kilometres you can be completely immersed in some of the wildest countryside in northern France.

The Aisne Valley on Two Wheels

A well-marked cycling and walking trail follows the Aisne river east from Rethel towards Attigny and beyond, passing through riverside meadows, small locks and villages where a boulangerie and a church are often the only signs of human habitation. The terrain is flat and the scenery changes constantly with the light and the season.

Spring brings wildflower meadows and nesting birds; autumn transforms the valley with amber and copper tones that are genuinely spectacular. The 25-kilometre loop from Rethel to Attigny and back via the opposite bank is manageable in a half-day and passes several picnic spots directly on the water's edge.

Into the Ardennes Forest

Drive or cycle north from Rethel on the D985 and within 15 minutes the landscape shifts dramatically from open champagne plains to the dense, cathedral-like forest of the Ardennes. Wild boar, roe deer and red squirrels are common sightings, particularly at dawn and dusk near forest clearings.

The forest around the villages of Signy-l'Abbaye and Novion-Porcien offers marked hiking trails through old-growth woodland where the silence is profound and the air smells of moss and pine resin. Signy-l'Abbaye itself has the evocative ruins of a Cistercian abbey set in a forest clearing — one of the most atmospheric spots in the entire region.
