Marché de Provins (Place du Châtel)
Every Saturday morning, Place du Châtel — the grand central square of the upper town, ringed by 12th-century arcaded houses — transforms into a proper weekly market where local producers from the Brie and Seine-et-Marne bring cheese, honey, seasonal vegetables and rose-petal preserves. It is the most atmospheric food market within 90 minutes of Paris, full stop.
What to Buy
Provins is famous throughout France for its roses, cultivated here since the 13th century when returning Crusaders brought Damascus rose cuttings back to the town. You will find rose-petal jam, rose honey, rose liqueur and rose-scented soaps at almost every stall.
Brie de Meaux — the canonical, AOC-protected brie produced just to the west — appears in wheels so ripe they almost breathe; pair a wedge with a ficelle from the boulangerie on the square corner for an instant picnic.
Timing and Atmosphere
The market runs from roughly 08:00 to 13:00 every Saturday; arrive before 10:00 if you want first pick of the farmhouse cheeses and the best cuts at the butcher's van.
The medieval timber-framed facades around the square make even a mundane grocery run feel cinematic — the covered market hall at the square's edge shelters a handful of permanent artisan stalls open Tuesday to Sunday.
