Vallée du Clain Walking Trail
The river Clain cuts a surprisingly wild, green corridor through the heart of Poitiers, and a well-marked walking trail follows its wooded banks for several kilometres between the old mills and limestone cliffs. It is the city's best-kept open secret — a place where herons fish in the shallows and kingfishers flash between the willows, ten minutes from the cathedral.
The Route and What You'll See
The most rewarding stretch runs from the Moulin de Chasseigne in the north to the Pont Joubert in the south — roughly 4 kilometres of flat, easy path that passes old mill buildings, medieval bridge remnants and several points where the limestone cliffs of the plateau loom dramatically above the floodplain. The path is well-maintained and suitable for trail shoes or even sturdy trainers.
Birdlife is the real reward: grey herons stand motionless in the shallows at dawn, and the Clain is one of the more reliable places in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine to spot the common kingfisher (martin-pêcheur) from the bank. In spring, reed warblers and great tits fill the riverside willows with noise.
Practical Tips for the Walk
The easiest starting point is the Parc de Blossac, from where a path descends the cliff face via a series of steps to the river level — the descent itself is dramatic and takes about 10 minutes. From the valley floor, the trail is clearly marked with yellow waymarks as part of the GR local network.
Carry water in summer as there are no cafés on the valley floor section. The path is shaded for most of its length, making it a genuinely comfortable option even in July and August when the plateau city bakes. Dogs on leads are welcome throughout.
