Plasencia Tuesday Market (El Martes)
Every Tuesday since 1196 — when King Alfonso VIII granted Plasencia its market charter — traders have spread their stalls across the old town's broad avenues. El Martes is one of the oldest continuously running weekly markets in Spain and it still pulses with genuine, unhurried Extremaduran life.
What You'll Find on the Stalls
The market sprawls along Calle Trujillo and the surrounding streets from around 8:00 until early afternoon. Farmers bring in seasonal produce: fat pimentones de la Vera (smoked paprika peppers), local honey, fresh goat's cheese, and the prized Jerte Valley cherries in late May and June.
Beyond food, stalls sell cheap clothing, leather goods, agricultural tools and household wares — the kind of utilitarian market that serves real locals rather than tourists. Wander to the far end of the street for the best fresh-produce section, where elderly vendors sell herbs from their own gardens.
How to Make the Most of It
Arrive before 9:30 to beat the crowds and catch the best produce before it sells out. The surrounding bars open early on market day; pull up a stool at any café on Calle del Sol and order a cortado with a tostada de manteca colorá (lard-spread toast with paprika) — the classic Extremaduran market breakfast.
The market is free to browse and the atmosphere is completely authentic. Tuesday is also a great day to book accommodation in Plasencia because the town is noticeably more alive than on other weekdays.
