Mirador del Castillo & City Walls Walk
Plasencia's medieval walls — largely intact and in places built over Roman foundations — wrap the old town in a dramatic stone embrace, and the ruined castle at the northern tip offers the finest panoramic view over the Jerte River valley below. On a clear morning the Sierra de Gredos floats on the horizon like a white-capped mirage.
The View from the Castle Ruins
The Castillo de Plasencia sits at the highest point of the walled city on the northern edge. Although only the outer shell survives, you can climb to the top of the remaining tower for an unobstructed 270-degree view: the Jerte River glinting in its gorge, the Roman bridge downstream, patchwork orchards and the forested ridges of La Vera beyond.
Sunset is the magic hour here. The low light turns the sandstone walls amber and the valley fills with a golden haze that makes every photograph look effortless. Locals bring wine and sit on the wall ledge — join them.
Walking the Walls
A signposted path runs along the top of the walls for roughly 2 km from the castle around to the Puerta de Trujillo gate. The walk is mostly flat, shaded in sections by old holm oaks, and passes through a series of small plazas and lookout points that most visitors rushing to the cathedral never find.
The best-preserved gate is the Puerta del Sol, a 15th-century horseshoe arch that still frames the road into the old town. Stop here for a photo before continuing to the Plaza Mayor.
