Val d'Orcia Walking Trail to Monticchiello
The 7 km waymarked footpath from Pienza's southern gate down into the Val d'Orcia and up to the walled village of Monticchiello is one of the most scenic half-day walks in all of Tuscany. You cross wheat fields edged with poppies in May, pass working sheep farms and arrive at a medieval village that has barely changed in 500 years.
The Route: What You Walk Through
The path descends from Porta al Ciglio through olive groves before opening onto the broad clay hills of the Crete Senesi landscape. The track is a mix of white gravel roads (strade bianche) and field-edge paths, all well signed with the red-and-white waymarks of the CAI (Club Alpino Italiano).
In late April and May the verges are thick with wild poppies, cornflowers and ox-eye daisies — the landscape that fills every Val d'Orcia postcard is at its most extravagant during these weeks. By July the wheat is harvested and the hills turn the colour of pale straw, which is beautiful in a completely different, more austere way.
Monticchiello: The Destination
The hilltop village of Monticchiello retains its 14th-century walls and a single main street of stone houses with window boxes. The church of Santi Leonardo e Cristoforo contains a detached fresco by Pietro Lorenzetti that most visitors to Tuscany never see.
The village hosts the Teatro Povero di Monticchiello each July and August — an open-air theatre festival written and performed by the villagers themselves, dealing with the social history of the Val d'Orcia. It has run every summer since 1967 and tickets sell out fast.
