Buca Mario & the Oltrarno Bacaro Scene
Cross the Arno into the Oltrarno neighbourhood and the tourist density drops sharply. This artisan quarter — home to gilders, bookbinders, restorers and independent wine bars — has its own aperitivo culture built around small, standing-room enoteca called bacari, where a glass of Vermentino and a plate of crostini costs less than a coffee on the Piazza della Repubblica.
Buca Mario and Via dello Sprone
Buca Mario, on Via dello Sprone near the Ponte Vecchio end of the Oltrarno, claims to be Florence's oldest restaurant (founded 1886) and still serves honest Florentine cooking — ribollita, pappa al pomodoro, bistecca Fiorentina — in a candlelit basement that feels unchanged since the 1950s. Book ahead; it fills up.
The street itself, Via dello Sprone, and the parallel Via dei Serragli are lined with small enoteca, independent coffee roasters and artisan workshops. An evening walk through this grid of streets between 6 and 8 pm catches the neighbourhood at its most animated.
Enoteca Pitti Gola e Cantina
On Piazza dei Pitti, directly opposite the Palazzo Pitti's rusticated stone façade, sits Pitti Gola e Cantina — a tiny, serious wine bar with perhaps 600 labels, most of them small Tuscan producers you will not find in a supermarket. The owner pours generous tastes before you commit to a bottle.
Pair your glass with a board of local cheeses and cured meats or the seasonal crostini. In good weather, tables spill onto the piazza with a direct view of the Palazzo Pitti — arguably the finest aperitivo setting in Florence.
The Boboli Garden Next Door
After your aperitivo, the Boboli Garden — the Medici's 45,000-square-metre formal garden behind the Palazzo Pitti — is worth an hour of wandering even if you skip the palace museums. The amphitheatre, the Neptune fountain and the cypress-lined avenues feel genuinely grand without the indoor-museum fatigue.
Entry to the Boboli is €10 (combined ticket with Palazzo Pitti museums available); it closes at dusk and is quietest on weekday mornings.
