Corniche de l'Estuaire & Belvédère de Mindin, Saint-Brevin-les-Pins
Standing at the Belvédère de Mindin on the southern bank of the Loire estuary, you get one of the most cinematic views in the entire region — the vast shimmering mouth of the Loire stretching to the Atlantic, the elegant arc of the Saint-Nazaire bridge overhead, and container ships sliding silently past salt marshes. It costs nothing and almost nobody outside France knows it exists.
The View and the Bridge
The Saint-Nazaire Bridge (Pont de Saint-Nazaire) spans 3,356 metres across the estuary and is the longest bridge in France. From the Belvédère de Mindin viewpoint at its southern foot, you can watch the full drama of estuary life: pleasure boats, ocean-going freighters, and on clear days the faint outline of the Guérande peninsula to the south.
The light here is extraordinary at dusk, when the bridge cables catch the last sun and the water turns copper and silver. Bring a wide-angle lens or simply sit on the grass bank and watch it happen.
The Corniche Walk
A signed coastal footpath — the Corniche de l'Estuaire — runs along the southern bank from Mindin toward Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, passing pine forests, sandy coves and the occasional oyster farm track. The 5-kilometre section from Mindin to the beach at Saint-Brevin is flat, easy and takes about 90 minutes at a gentle pace.
The path connects to the Loire à Vélo cycling route, so it's equally enjoyable by bike. Rental bikes are available in Saint-Nazaire, a short ferry ride across the estuary from the northern bank.
Getting There
The most atmospheric way to arrive is by the free Navibus ferry that crosses the estuary from Saint-Nazaire's town quay to Mindin in about 15 minutes — a tiny maritime adventure in itself. By car, Saint-Brevin-les-Pins is 55 kilometres southwest of Nantes via the D213.
There is a small car park directly at the Belvédère de Mindin. The viewpoint itself is open at all times and completely free.
