Parco Regionale dei Boschi di Carrega
Just 18 km south-west of Parma, the Boschi di Carrega is a 1,300-hectare regional park of ancient oak and hornbeam forest that the Farnese and then Maria Luigia of Parma used as a private hunting reserve. Today it is one of the most accessible and least-crowded forest parks in Emilia-Romagna, laced with signed trails and home to roe deer, wild boar and over 100 bird species.
Walking the Ducal Trails
The park's centrepiece is the Casino dei Boschi, a neoclassical hunting lodge built for Marie-Louise (Maria Luigia), Napoleon's second wife and Duchess of Parma, in the early 19th century. It sits in a clearing beside a small artificial lake that mirrors the surrounding oaks — one of the loveliest picnic spots within an hour of any Italian city.
Trail 1, the Anello del Lago, is a gentle 4 km loop that takes about 90 minutes and passes the lake, the lodge exterior and the oldest section of oak woodland. Trail 3 extends into denser forest and is better for birdwatching, particularly in the early morning when woodpeckers are active.
Seasons and What They Bring
Autumn is the park's most spectacular season: from mid-October the oaks and hornbeams turn amber and copper, wild mushrooms push through the leaf litter and the air smells of damp earth and woodsmoke from the park warden's lodge. Porcini and ovoli mushrooms can be found by experienced foragers, though a permit is technically required.
Spring brings bluebells and wild garlic under the canopy, and the lake fills with frog song at dusk. Summer is cooler here than in the city by a reliable 4–5°C, making a morning walk a practical escape from Parma's July heat.
