Canal Saint-Martin, 10th Arrondissement

The Canal Saint-Martin stretches 4.5 kilometres through the 10th and 11th arrondissements, lined with iron footbridges, plane trees and some of the most characterful cafés, concept stores and bakeries in the city.

The Canal Itself

Commissioned by Napoleon in 1802 to supply fresh water to Paris, the canal today is the beating heart of a neighbourhood that feels genuinely lived-in rather than curated for tourists. On Sundays the Quai de Jemmapes is closed to traffic and taken over by cyclists, picnickers and pétanque players.

The nine locks between République and Stalingrad are mesmerising to watch — barge captains navigate them with millimetric precision, and the hydraulic lock gates are original 19th-century ironwork.

Where to Eat and Drink

Du Pain et des Idées at 34 Rue Yves Toudic is arguably the finest traditional boulangerie in Paris — the escargot pastries (spiral croissants filled with pistachio and dark chocolate) alone justify the trip. Arrive before 09:00 on weekends to avoid a long queue.

Ten Belles on Rue de la Grange aux Belles is the café that helped define third-wave coffee culture in Paris; their flat whites and cardamom buns are the ideal canal-side breakfast. For lunch, Chez Prune on Quai de Valmy has been a neighbourhood institution since 1999.

Shopping and Exploring

The streets between the canal and République are dense with independent bookshops, vinyl record stores and concept boutiques. Antoine et Lili on Quai de Valmy — a flamingo-pink shop selling colourful clothing and global handicrafts — has been a neighbourhood landmark for 30 years.

Walk north along the canal to Hôpital Saint-Louis, a remarkably intact 17th-century hospital complex with a beautiful interior courtyard that's open to the public and almost entirely overlooked by guidebooks.
