Oltrarno & the Artisan Workshops
Cross any of the Arno bridges away from the tourist centre and you enter the Oltrarno — literally 'beyond the Arno' — a neighbourhood of narrow medieval streets where goldsmiths, bookbinders, furniture restorers and leather workers still operate out of the same workshops their predecessors occupied in the Renaissance.
The Craft Streets
Via Maggio is the grandest of the Oltrarno streets, lined with antique dealers and art galleries operating out of tall-windowed ground-floor spaces that feel unchanged since the 18th century. Browse freely; the dealers are knowledgeable and rarely pushy.
Borgo San Jacopo and the streets running off it toward Piazza della Passera are where the working artisans concentrate: you can watch a bookbinder hand-sewing signatures, a gilder applying gold leaf to a picture frame, or a cobbler resoling shoes using techniques unchanged for centuries — all through open workshop doors.
Piazza della Passera & Santo Spirito
Piazza della Passera is a tiny, almost secret square where three excellent small restaurants cluster around a central well — Trattoria dell'Orto, Il Guscio and Bevo Vino among them — making it one of the most pleasant spots in Florence for a long lunch.
Piazza Santo Spirito, a five-minute walk away, is the social heart of the Oltrarno: a scruffy, unpretentious square with a small daily market, a Brunelleschi church with an unfinished façade, and café tables where locals actually outnumber tourists throughout the day.
Evening in the Oltrarno
The Oltrarno comes alive at aperitivo hour (around 18:00–20:00) when the bars around Santo Spirito and Piazza della Passera put out free snacks with every drink — a Florentine tradition that amounts to a light dinner if you order two rounds.
For dinner, the neighbourhood has Florence's best concentration of serious, unfussy trattorias: Buca dell'Orafo, Il Latini and the tiny Osteria dell'Enoteca on Via Romana all operate within walking distance and none of them needs a reservation if you arrive at 19:30.
